With a travel ban in place, Richard and his partner Tim, are stranded as the only guests in a small riad in the Dades Valley in southeast Morocco.
“Since March 21, Tim and I have been in lockdown south of the High Atlas mountains. The Moroccan government had announced they would stop trains and close interregional roads on March 24. Then without warning they closed things down early.
We missed the first two government-organized flights to Canada, as we weren’t given enough notice to get to the airports. By the third it felt safer to stay here rather than brave airports, planes and big cities; with a similar population Morocco has far fewer deaths than Canada.
We’re the only guests in a small riad in the Dades Valley. Only two staff too, as the owner is trapped in another town. But it’s stunningly beautiful and because it’s the countryside we can go for walks. The lockdown is supposed to last until May 20, airports not open before May 31. But everything is “jusqu’à nouvel ordre,” i.e., indefinitely.” – Richard Fung
