A day in the life of a young Cree girl isolated deep in the boreal forest of northern Alberta.
“I wanted to explore the theme of déjà vu during isolation, and what that might feel like from the point of view of a young Nêhiyaw-iskwêsis (Cree girl). This short film features my daughter Nîpisîy (Willow) who has been acting in my indie films since she was a tiny tot. Nôhcimihk (Cree Nêhiyawi for “in the bush”) was shot deep in the boreal forest of northern Alberta, near Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement, in the back forty of my mom’s property. She has a hunting cabin along the Keg River. It follows Willow over the course of a single day, isolated at her family’s hunting cabin — or is she? Something ominous may be in the surrounding woods, or just in her mind. I was only able to stay up north for a few days this past summer, and only had a few hours to film the entire short at the hunting cabin, as we travelled in by ATV’s that morning and had to leave well before nightfall. I shot it handheld on my iPhone 8 and used an attachable fish-eye lens for the security bush camera footage. I cut it on Final Cut Pro 7 and used all ambient and natural shots sounds from that day, save for the Raven noises which I captured awhile back.” – Jay Çardinal Villeneuve
